A Match Made in Heaven

“Watching Grandma in her kitchen, taught me so many lessons about not only baking, but in life.

Always by her side, I watched and learned about patience. Especially when she baked cakes. The steps can sometimes be tedious, but so worth it when you pull a stunning success out of the oven.

I learned forgiveness, because in baking, things don’t always turn out perfectly. A pie crust might crack, or a cake might drop a bit if you beat the batter a little too aggressively.

And importantly, I learned humility. Even though we all fawned over everything she made, she simply smiled and said, ‘thank you Sweetheart.’”

“I also learned to follow my instincts and trust my experience when a ‘recipe for success’ isn’t always available.“

That last one was undoubtedly her biggest take-away when Rebecca LaCount decided to follow her dream and open Slice of Heaven Bakery in Rome, Wisconsin. Located in the Rome Town Center just across the street from the gazebo, Slice of Heaven not only exudes the charm and warmth of Grandma’s kitchen, but all the experience, dedication (she starts her day at 3:00am every day), and know-how of a well-accomplished baker in her own right.

Rebecca continues, “When I think about the lessons I learned at the hem of Grandma’s apron, I’m inspired to re-create them on my own and carry on her legacy.”

And boy, is she ever!

As you walk into Slice of Heaven, your olfactory senses immediately go into overdrive. Come in through the front door and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee hangs in the air. A smell so unmistakably wonderful you can taste it even before your first sip.

Come in the through side door, and you’re met with a perfect blend of decadent smells that at first you can’t identify. Is it the blueberry muffins? So good. No, it’s cinnamon. It’s the cinnamon twists. But wait, pumpkin. Pumpkin pie. Then you spy the display case, and it starts to make sense. They’re all there. Along with, a seductive assortment of cakes, breads, and cookies. Oh my!

So now what do you do? You thought you’d come in for coffee cake and a cup of coffee, but when it’s all said and done, you leave with a half dozen chocolate covered Oreos, a loaf of garlic cheese bread, and a couple Reversed Smores.

Don’t forget the coffee cake and coffee.

For some though, it’s the total experience that brings them into Slice of Heaven. There’s a chrome and Formica dinette that looks like Rebecca carried it over straight from Grandma’s kitchen. And from her family room, two cushy couches facing each other on a peony adorned area rug (because “It was Grandma’s favorite flower.”), a hutch with a record player, a Zenith radio, and a black and white tube TV.

“That’s what Slice of Heaven is about. To transport you back in time. Where you can experience delicious family recipes, sit and rest awhile and feel so very welcomed. Because you’re family when you’re here.”

So, next time you get a hankerin’ for something sweet and wonderful, be sure to stop by Slice of Heaven. Chances are, it’ll become part of your daily routine.

And with that, it’s no wonder that Slice of Heaven Bakery and Rome, Wisconsin is a match made in Heaven.
