Ice Fishing

Our beautiful lakes in the Town of Rome are utilized year-round by many who participate in this popular winter pastime. Differing from traditional open water angling, ice fishing does not require casting; however, does require similar elements of patience. Anglers drill holes through layers of ice with a tool called an “auger” and set “tip ups” to indicate when a fish strikes.

Throughout the winter, there are many fisheries that are held annually on the Town of Rome’s frozen lakes. Despite the chilly temperatures, people come out for these community events to hunker down in their ice shanties, drill their fishing hole, sink their poles into the water, set their tip up, and wait for that prize fish to bite.
