Eating Our Way Through Rome: Mammoth Bar

When you have a golf resort as unique and special as Sand Valley, it stands to reason that the clubhouse bar should be equally exceptional. In fact, to call it a clubhouse bar is a disservice as it is.

Yes, the word bar is in the name, but The Mammoth Bar is way more than a bar. Some would argue it’s one of the finer dining establishments in the area. With its warm, rustic ambiance, high airy ceilings, and large picture windows looking out over the expansive first hole of the original course, you know there has to be a menu that’ll keep pace with such magnificence.

And so it is. With a carefully curated selection of appetizers, sandwiches, and entrées, you’re sure to find one of your favorites, but undoubtedly with a unique twist. For starters, the spinach artichoke dip is not made with any old cheese, but with melted, gooey Grana Padano - a cheese that was first produced by Italian monks almost 1,000 years ago, and to this day is considered to be one of the best in the world. Even everybody’s favorite, the grilled cheese sandwich, has been made so much better by adding Gruyere and bacon, and stacking it on toasted brioche, to name just a couple of their sandwich offerings.

And chocolate cake isn’t just chocolate cake when it’s about a thousand layers high and drizzled with sweet balsamic sauce and a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Certainly, big enough to share, but why would you?

All that said, let’s not forget that Mammoth Bar is still a bar. And with a selection of specialty drinks and craft beers as impressive as the food menu, it might take you a minute or two to choose, but don’t worry, there’s no bad choice.

So whether you just finished a round of golf on one of Sand Valley’s magnificent courses, or you’re simply looking for an uncomplicated, yet uncompromising, “bite and a beer,” Mammoth Bar is exactly what you’re looking for.

Mammoth Bar is located in the Sand Valley clubhouse at 597 Leopold Way in Rome, Wisconsin and is open to the public.
